Million Dollar Metro
My ‘things to blog about list’ is still way too long, but this post really needs to be online before the year ends, as I promised Pauline Teunissen and Anneloes van den Bergh of design studio Million Dollar Design, and I really want to share these images of their stunning work with you!
In 2008 the design duo has been selected by the Amsterdam Public Transport Company to transform one of the 30 year-old Zilvermeeuw subway cars into art. Last summer the project was finally realized and since then you can take the ‘Million Dollar Metro’ from Amsterdam Central Station (line 53 or 54). When you’re lucky, as there are 44 more subway trains that have been metamorphosed into driving artworks.
Pauline and Anneloes spent a lot of time on creating the wonderful underwater world that is visible in the subway-carriage and added many special elements to it. “Most of the animal illustrations have been shaped by collage parts. For example, a jellyfish with the body of a small pillow or a jellyfish that has completely been formed by ink and paper-cuts. We also made photos of models and friends to transform them into mystical sea creatures. When you have a closer look, you can even discover Anneloes and me,” Pauline explains.
The art trains will run for about three years. Well, I still hope that next time I take the underground, I can finally enjoy this art project of Million Dollar Design in real!
